Island riding in
Thailand
Thailand has several thousand
kilometers of beach and coastline on the Gulf of Thailand or the
Andaman Sea. Everywhere you go, you will see the standard Thai
built "Speed Boat" with a 200hp Yamaha Outboard. If you have
your own wakeboard and equipment, finding someone to give you a ride
should be easy.
Around the various tourist spots,
you will find banana boat operators who do have a rope and a board.
Boats range from 50HP Yamaha's on 15 foot boats up to the bigger
200HP. You will have to look to find equipment.
Prices range from 500 Baht for
the 50HP - 80HP range for 15 minutes up to 1,000 Baht for the larger
200HP boats. Make sure you negotiate a price with the drivers
before you hit the water. Driver skills will vary so be
careful around that prop.
Since 2005 a few new "Water
Sports" centers that offer water skiing and wakeboarding have opened
around the prime tourist destinations of Khao Tao, Koh Phangna, Koh
Samui and Phuket. These centers operative with the standard 25
foot speedboat with 150hp to 200hp engines. Most will have a
tower to help with the upward pull and some will have "fat sacks" or
weight to add to the boat and improve the wake.
Coaching and equipment is
included in the price, but this is for the beginner to intermediate
level wake boarders. If you are looking for serious coaching,
equipment and boats you will need to check out one of the wakeboard
schools listed in the "Boat Lakes" section of this website.
